Know how to turn a long-term empty property back into a home?
A Local Authority in Hampshire is looking for an experienced Empty Homes Officer to support its housing service on an initial 3-month contract.
This is a great opportunity for someone who understands the challenges surrounding long-term empty properties and can work proactively with owners to help bring homes back into use.
Unlike a traditional Private Sector Housing enforcement post, HHSRS experience isn't essential for this opportunity, making it particularly relevant to officers with a strong background in empty homes, landlord engagement or the wider private rented sector.
What you'll be doing
- Managing a caseload of empty homes and progressing properties towards being brought back into use
- Engaging directly with property owners and landlords to understand why homes remain empty
- Exploring practical solutions with owners to encourage properties back into occupation
- Investigating problematic or long-term empty properties
- Maintaining clear case records and progressing cases effectively
- Working with internal teams and relevant external stakeholders
- Supporting the Council's wider approach to housing and the private rented sector
- Keeping up to date with changes affecting landlords and tenants, including the Renters' Rights Act
What we're looking for
You'll ideally have previous Local Authority experience within Empty Homes, Private Sector Housing, Housing Standards or a closely related housing service.
We're particularly interested in candidates with:
- Previous Empty Homes Officer or empty property casework experience
- Strong landlord and property owner engagement skills
- Experience managing complex housing cases independently
- Knowledge of private sector housing and relevant housing legislation
- An understanding of enforcement within a Local Authority environment
- Strong negotiation, communication and case management skills
Contract details
Location: Hampshire
Rate: £40-£50 per hour
Contract: Initial 3 months
Working pattern: Hybrid - 2 days per week on site
