Head of Building Safety
Local Authority | Interim Opportunity
2/3 days in office per week
We are working with a Local Authority that is undertaking a significant transformation of its Building Safety function and is seeking an experienced Head of Building Safety to help shape and lead the service for the future.
This is a high-profile role focused on programme leadership, governance, accountability, and the successful delivery of building safety initiatives across the housing portfolio. The council is investing heavily in the development of the function and is looking for someone who can establish the right structure, processes, and culture to support future compliance requirements.
The Role
Reporting into senior leadership, you will take ownership of the council's Building Safety programme, driving key initiatives and ensuring compliance obligations are effectively managed and delivered.
While technical knowledge of building safety legislation and compliance is important, this role is primarily about leadership, programme management, and strategic oversight. External consultants are supporting the development of specifications, frameworks, and processes, leaving you to focus on implementation, accountability, and delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the council's Building Safety programme and helping shape the long-term structure of the service.
- Providing strategic oversight of fire and building safety compliance activities.
- Managing and monitoring delivery of the Fire Risk Assessment programme and associated remedial works.
- Ensuring clear governance, accountability, and reporting frameworks are in place.
- Working closely with internal stakeholders and external consultants to implement new processes and programmes.
About You
We're looking for an experienced leader who can provide confidence, direction, and structure within a developing service.
You will ideally have:
- Experience leading building safety, fire safety, compliance, or asset-related programmes within social housing or local government.
- Strong programme and project management experience.
- A solid understanding of building safety legislation and compliance requirements.
- Experience overseeing the delivery of compliance works and risk management programmes.
- Excellent stakeholder management and leadership skills.
- The ability to build and develop teams while maintaining strategic oversight.
- A proactive and solutions-focused approach.
