Senior Planning Officer (Development Management)

I'm working closely with an East of England-based Local Authority that is looking to bring in an Interim Senior Planning Officer to support their Development Management team through a busy period. This is an excellent opportunity to step into a well-structured, efficient planning service with consistent leadership and a strong case pipeline.

I have an existing contractor placed in the team and can offer first-hand insight into the working culture and team expectations.

The Role

You'll manage a broad caseload of applications, including complex minors and majors, while also providing guidance and oversight to junior officers. You'll play an important role in maintaining timely performance and ensuring the delivery of robust, policy-compliant decisions.

Key responsibilities:

• Handling a variety of planning applications, including more complex cases.

• Preparing reports and recommendations in line with national and local planning policy.

• Representing the authority at Planning Committee and appeal hearings, if required.

• Supporting junior officers and helping drive service consistency and quality.

• Working independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team culture.

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience working in development management within a local authority setting.

• Comfortable managing a high-volume, diverse caseload with complex planning constraints.

• Strong understanding of planning legislation and policy.

• Confident communicator with excellent report writing skills.

• RTPI membership (or eligibility) preferred but not essential.
